Carl Zimmer really goes deep into this study of bees and the
way they work. They all are driven by one goal and do not work for any selfish
reason. They work for the hive and for the queen. If the system was not set up
this way, the system would fall apart. I believe this is what is happening to
the system of democracy in the United States. Senators and other
representatives of the government seem to be more focused on what they believe.
This also explains the division between the Democratic party and the Republican
party. Both are so focused on their own point of view on how the government
should be run that they are not focusing on making the country better. If both
had a shared goal, there would be a more prosperous and successful country.
I liked the
comparison of the bee hive to a brain. Comparing the bees to neurons also made
a lot of sense and caused everything to click. The bees do anything necessary
for the hive the same way neurons are working for the brain, they are the
messengers of brain. When I read this the first thing that came to my mind was
how the brain keeps the body under control and running smoothly, for the most
part. This is a good example of how the country should work. Like I said
before, this is an example that the country should follow or at least test the
outcomes. If the testing works, which it does as seen in New England, the
government can one day adopt this practice and it would deeply benefit the
system of the country.
The deeper
meaning of this essay goes really deep. I mean think about it, going from bees
to the democratic system, it requires a lot of connecting the dots and hard
thinking. I chose this because the direction of the essay became clearer to me
more towards the middle of the essay. The majority of the other essays took me
a second read to understand. I actually connected this to the OWS essay because
the OWS protesters wanted change in our government system. This change in the
system would really benefit many movements. I do agree that a change in the
system would help very greatly and would solve many problems in the world or at
least local communities for a start.
I completely agree with you. The democratic views that the essay is able to connect from bees to our political situation as of the last few years are what people are looking for. The views of many are nearly always worth more than the views of just one. This is because rather than having one persons opinion, you are hearing the perspective of many different people, which allows for decisions that are fair to a larger amount of people to be made. This is how the bee's work, as small pieces to a larger puzzle, and how humans try to work, but often fail. If us as humans and as countries could adapt ourselves to this system, we'd be able to at least begin to solve a lot of the issues that we find ourselves in.
