On any
person who desires such queer prizes, New York will bestow the gift of
loneliness and the gift of privacy.
No one
should come to New York to live unless he is willing to be lucky
The
oft-quoted thumbnail sketch of New York is, of course: “It’s a wonderful place,
but I’d hate to live there.”
Well firstly, this essay was really long. But I feel it was not a bad read. I
obviously love the city and have accepted it which is one of the points that
E.B. White mentions. But I have a clearer understanding of how outsiders think.
When outsiders come to visit the city they are in awe and love visiting new
places and everything that there is to see in this great city. However, they
see the fast paces life and and turned away with how hectic everything looks.
Which would explain why they claim they don’t want to live here. I agree with
White when he says that people from outside the city who live in villages or
are accustomed lo living with the friendliness of a little neighborhood shouldn’t
dislike the busy city. White says that the city is made up of these small
neighborhoods, just thousands of them. I also agree that there are times where
I do not like what the city is turning into. Everyone is so busy with
themselves that they forget the million other people around them. I also think
this is the reason New Yorkers are called rude. We are just so focused on where
we need to be and what we need to do that we do not have time to help out a
lost tourist without coming off as rude. I feel like this essay, again, had me
all over the place. But I believe the author achieved his goal of making the
reader think.
